Welcome to Achill Wheelers

In 2012 a group of Achill cyclists came together to take part in a charity cycle, the man behind the idea was Michael McNamara. The challenge was to cycle from Croke Park, Dublin to Davit Park in Achill, 300km.
We started training on Sunday mornings wondering what had we let ourselves in for, but as the months passed we realised, we can do this. Michael had everything well planned, even down to the weather, a nice north easterly breeze to help us along. In 2012 and 2013 the cycle was broken in Ballaghaderreen for an overnight stop but it was suggested that we could do this cycle in one day. So in 2014 the cycle was done in one day,(300k in one day).
After completing this cycle three times we raised in excess of €33,000 for various charities and the local Gaa club. We decided to take a break in 2015, but watch this space; plans are afoot for something in 2016.
As well as doing our own cycle, we also cycle at charity events all over the country. Almost every weekend, we have club members away.
In October 2014, we decided to form our club, Achill Wheelers Cycling Club after some meetings. A committee was formed Sean Lyons, chairman; Michael McNamara secretary; Martin McNulty treasurer; Anton McNulty, pro.
As winter was on us, we decided we would try spinning/turbo trainer classes during the week. These were a bit of fun with some serious amount of sweat lost; people go at their own pace, as the club is open to all levels of cyclist. We hope to purchase some equipment for these classes as more people are interested in trying them out.
We also have our cycles at the weekends and all our routes have a shorter option. We would like to see more people get involved as we are leisure cyclists. There are only a couple of members that have a competition licence.
This year we also held our first Achill Wheelers Wild Atlantic Way Leisure Cycle on the 12 September, and it is going to be an annual event. There was very positive reaction from the participants and it looks like this has the potential to become a very popular event into the future.
Although we have a few lady cyclists as members, there is only one that cycles regularly, (Laura).  We would like to get a ladies group going if we can get a few more ladies out on their bikes. Two of our members have done some coaching courses so we can help anyone who wants to start.  We are a fully registered club with Cycling Ireland.
